Kanada blev Fossil of the Year i Köpenhamn. Det är inte svårt att förstå. Inte alls. Och det är inte bra de stora sakerna som gör det. Det är lika mycket de små. Ett exempel:
I Sverige finns sensorer i gatan som ställer om trafikljusen till grönt när man närmar sig. Det är inget vi svenska bilförare och gångtrafikanter tänker på, det bara sker. Är det inga bilar så får man grönt ljus när man närmar sig. Magiskt. Och miljövänligt. Och bra för trafikrytmen.
Här har jag hittills inte sett ett enda sådant trafikljus. Man får stå och vänta. Och vänta. Och vänta. Och sedan kanske det slår om till grönt. Även när det är helt tomt på trafik från alla andra håll. Trafikmängden påverkar inte ljusens intervaller och det skapar förstås köer på de mest konstiga ställen.
Som gångtrafikant är det lika frustrerande. Jag ska återkomma till gångtrafikantens dilemma en annan gång men kan nämna nu att de knappar man kan trycka på för att få företräde i Sverige inte existerar här. Det finns knappar på en tre-fyra trafikstolpar i Westmount, men de är bara där för syns skull för de fungerar inte.
Faktiskt är nog det här den mest frustrerande detaljen i den quebeciska trafiken. Till och med mer frustrerande än bilförarna i Montreal.

Canada was named Fossil of the Year in Copenhagen. It is not difficult to understand. Not at all. And it is not only the big things that matter but just as much the small. An example:
In Sweden there are sensors in the street that turn traffic lights to green when you approach. As Swedish drivers we don't think about this very much, it just happens. If there are no cars the light switches to green when you approach. Magical. And environmentally friendly. And good for the traffic rhythm.
I have yet to see such a traffic light in Montreal. Here, you wait. And wait. And wait. And finally you may get a green light. Even when there are no cars at all coming from the other directions. The amount of traffic has no influence on the intervals of the traffic lights and of course this creates traffic congestion in the strangest places.
As a pedestrian it is equally frustrating. I will get back to the dilemmas of a pedestrian later but I can mention that the buttons you can press to get priority at a traffic light as a pedestrian do not exist here. There are buttons on 3-4 traffic lights in Westmount but they are only for show because they do not work.
Actually this is probably the most frustrating detail of the quebecois traffic. Even more frustrating than the Montreal drivers themselves.
